Jewel

Box

By: Hannah Mortenson

Hannah Mortenson is a passionate photographer and singer/songwriter. As she develops both of talents and skills she deepens the bonds between music and visual art forms. (See Hannah's artist instagram account linked below)

In her photography series "Jewel Box" she joins music with photography by creating a series of cover art and promo album art featuring three different singer/songwriters from Southern Virginia University. Jordan Cargill as Trace, TJ DuPaix with The Delegration, and Ellie Simpson. Each songwriter came with their own genres, styles and tastes. Hannah sought to capture images that would match the feeling of the music as well as the brand of the songwriter. TJ sent in a song called "Falling For You" a reflective pop song about falling in love. Trace sent a list of pop and hiphop/rap songs capsulating the experiences he's had in the past year of his life. Ellie Simpson shared her music style as a story telling writing in singer/songwriter and indie genres. (click the music note icons above to find the artist Instagram page for each songwriter.)

A "jewel box" refers to the plastic casing what holds CD's. CD's often come with a small pamphlet that includes pictures, lyrics and credits for the creators of the album and CD packaging. Jewel boxes would hold images like the album art in this series.
